Frequently Asked Questions

Here's some answers to common questions we often get regarding our fishing charters. We hope these answers help. We will, of course, answer any others you may ask prior to departure, by phone or by contacting us at info@tortugacharters.com.

  1. What do I need to bring?

Some people just hop on with nothing!

TortugaIV has an air-conditioned galley with soft drinks, water, and snacks available for purchase. We also have ice cold beer available for purchase, to quench your fish catching thirst.

We supply the rod & reel, on board cold storage for the fish, fish cleaning, and the fishing license.

You may bring a small personal cooler with you if you like( no glass, please ). You might consider sun block (wash this off your hands, fish hate sun block!), sunglasses, hat, camera and cool clothing for warm weather.

  2. Will I catch fish?

That depends on how you wiggle your worm! Seriously, it's hard not to catch something, but most of all you will have a great time! If you seem to be having trouble, for whatever reason, ask one of our friendly top notch mates for special help.

  3. Will I get seasick?

We hope not, but we have seen it happen. If you ever get motion sickness, or feel you may, be sure to come prepared. There are many options available. Wristbands are available on the boat. Then there’s always ginger ale and soda crackers, an old favorite.

  4. How far out does the boat go?

Trip lengths are average 4 hours depending where the fish are. We travel about 5 to 8 miles from the dock to the reef. The travel time on this is about 30 minutes.

  5. What can we catch?

Red grouper, black grouper, yellowtail snapper , mangrove snapper, triggerfish,, cobia, mackerel, and amberjack. There are over 30 kinds of edible reef fish in these waters.

  6. How many people does the boat hold?

TORTUGA IV is Coastguard approved for 49 passengers. We take up to 49 people fishing per trip. The boat is 65 ft. in length and has a 24 foot beam, and we fish all the way around the boat.

  7. What if it’s raining?

Rain doesn’t bother the fish! In the summer it can cool things down and most showers are just a passing thing. A lot of the time when it’s raining on shore, it’s not on the Gulf.

  8. Can I bring my own gear?

Why sure! As long as you know what you are doing. Please consult the crew to make sure you gear is acceptable.

  9. Do I need reservations?

Reservations are recommended to ensure a spot on the boat. There are some quiet days when you can just hop on, though if you'd like to hold a spot, you should call the office with your name, phone number, and the number of people in your party to guarantee a spot on a trip.

  10. Are souvenirs available?

We have some great Tortuga t-shirts, tank tops, long sleeve shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and visors available for purchase.
